I’ve been the webmaster for The Project Hate MCMXCIX since 2001 — back when that meant hand-coding HTML and working with frames, Flash navigation, and fixed screen resolutions. Over the years, the site evolved alongside web standards: from table-based layouts to div-based XHTML/CSS, and eventually to WordPress who at that point finally started to produce relatively clean HTML as well.
The site’s structure has remained largely unchanged since 2007, built around clean code and a fixed layout that still adapts reasonably well to smaller screens. However, the rise of mobile browsing has made responsiveness increasingly important, and this particular site was never designed with that in mind.
Although the need for a responsive update has been discussed for years, low traffic levels and the shift of fan engagement to social media meant it was never an urgent issue. Recently, I’ve been testing different approaches — whether updating the existing codebase or moving to a new theme altogether. One way or another, some level of renewal is likely to happen in late 2025 or early 2026.
